Cartmel village is 2.5 miles northwest of Grange-over-Sands and close to the River Eea. The village takes its name from the Cartmel Peninsula, and was historically known as Kirkby in Cartmel. The village is the location of the 12th-century Cartmel Priory, around which it initially grew. 

Since the mid-twentieth century, the village has been a popular tourist destination, and more recently a reputable foodie location, with 3 Michelin-starred restaurants in Cartmel, a number of well-loved Cartmel pubs and the must-try Cartmel sticky toffee pudding. Lake Windermere
